How to Identify Genuine Job Invites

As the scourge of unemployment hits Nigeria, some unscrupulous people seem to be fleecing job seekers in an organised fashion of fake employment opportunities.

While some people are trying to earn a honest living from legal jobs, a particular set of people (let’s call them job scammers) are trying to swindle unsuspecting graduates of the little they have.

These are some fool-proof to ascertain the genuity of job mails:

1. SENDER’S EMAIL:

No legitimate firm will send out an interview invite with an “@gmail.com” or “@yahoo.com” email address. All organizations have their own customized email address(es). Something like vacancies@tori.ng would be legitimate as opposed to tori@yahoo.com

2. “TO” DETAILS:

Just below the mail subject, view details and see how many people the mail was sent to. If there’s any other email asides yours, just run for the sake of your life and wallet. ONLY scammers send “interview” invites in bulk. No sane organization does that. Once you view details and you find several other email addresses as receivers, it is scam. Period!

3. COMPANY LOGO

“Most” legitimate organizations include their logo either above or below the body of the mail. Not all organizations do this but very many do.

4. SALUTATION

If a job invite is legit, then the company sure has the name of who they are looking to meet. A legit opening would be; “Dear (your name)” as opposed to an orsinary “Dear”, “Hi”, etc.

5. BODY

“Thanks for your application for the post of “customer care agent”, we would like to schedule an interview.…(legit).

‘In response to your application, you have been invited for a “career talk”‘….(Not legit). What the hell is a career talk and how will that put food on the table?

Notice also that in the illegitimate one, the position you allegedly applied for wasn’t stated. (Epic fail). These are the kind of invites you honour and at the venue prospective drivers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, all take the same aptitude test.

6. PHONE NUMBERS

I’m not sure if legit organizations include contact numbers in mails but one thing i know for sure is that if the need to include a phone number arises, it won’t be a personal contact detail. In other words, it would be for more, Mari Williams and Co LTD: 0009875, 008765. .
Not call Mike on 08765 or call Angel on 00433.

There are several other ways to ascertain the genuity of job invites but these are the ones I’ve discovered work for me. If you have other fool-proof tips, kindly share in the comments section.
